Style and Soul

A lot of us are recessionistas in real life - style enthusiasts who always keep an eye out for the latest sales, biggest price cuts and frugal finds. For every fashionista on a budget, this is your lucky month as I give you a quick list of the recent bazaar schedules and brand sale announcements for the month of July.

I've come up with an acceptable name (not as creative as I wanted it to be) to call my entries every time I give a quick rundown of some beauty and fashion news. Since the word "announcement" has been overly used, the peg is similar to a news report - fast and informative.

I've done this with my other friends but not for work and definitely not for a guy - real guy. Haha!

I was too cautious not to pick anything that he might find eeerrr... quite feminine?

I have one mini project right up my sleeve recently and it's styling a promising radio personality, DJ Boom of 91.5 Big Radio. Naks, kung maka-build up, haha! Currently, he's looking for a few sponsors that might help him propel his career. However, both of us totally understand the reality that usually, starting DJs don't get any support from any brands yet - not until they become really famous.

Aside from being relatively new in the radio industry, he hosts a local FM station which targets the mass audience. To a certain extent, this could be a disadvantage (pwede ring advantage) because there's a possibility that companies would  go for those who cater to either the A-B demographic, not masa. Wag na magdeny, aminin! Let's say for example, the boys of Boys Night Out from Magic 89.9, or DJ Mo Twister (when he was still here).

I get it. I know that. This is just how it works in this industry. But what made me agree to working with DJ Boom is the fact that we were classmates in college and I know how good he is. He graduated with honors in UP Diliman and if you talk to him as a regular person, not as his radio character, you can tell that he really has the smarts.

It's just that, here in the country, when one speaks English, he is perceived as intelligent and well-educated while the one who talks in Filipino is assumed to be shallow and an airhead. This is the stereotype currently running in our society. Yes, the Filipino language is for the laymen but it is never inferior. I may blog in English all I want just to cater to all types of readers but it's Filipino that I use in my everyday language.

This is why other disc jocks for English stations are placed on the pedestal while masa DJs are made fun of and not really taken seriously because of their "funny" names like Chris-tsupe or Papa Jack or DJ BoomBay. Succumbing to these circumstances, I remain again, positive that  DJ Boom will find his place in the industry and when he does, a lot more opportunities will come his way. He just needs to work his ass off and has to pay his dues first (O diba, just look at Mr.Fu!). Sooner or later, he'd be reaping the fruits of his labor. This applies to all of us, of course.

But while we wait for the bigger things that will surely come his way as long as he patiently waits, we would like to personally thank Hang Ten for giving him the chance at a mini collaboration. In good faith, I pitched in the proposal and it makes me happy that  Hang Ten was willing to tie-up with me and my buddy DJ Boom. It's a gesture our tandem truly appreciate!

This explains why we were at Hang Ten (SM North Edsa) picking out clothes! Hehe! It has a nice selection for men over there, plus, a lot were on sale! I personally like its button-downs and some kick-ass graphic tees!

So when the opportunity landed on my lap and got invited to Hang Ten's Special Event held at their flagship store in SM Mall of Asia, I wouldn't pass up the chance to give one blogger (especially a starting one) the experience of being a part of blogger events. I told myself, it's not my day but my reader's day.

The winner of my Hang Ten mini contest was Paulyn. She just started blogging a few months ago and this was her first blogger event. If there's one thing you should know about me, I'm not the friendliest person in the world and most of the time, people's first impression of me is intimidating or a snob at times. I'm friendly promise pero sa mga close ko lang. Urgh should work on that! Haha.

Anyway, I was nervous to meet her (totoo!). What if she finds me boring? What if she thinks I'm intimidating? What if she'd feel out of place? What are we going to talk about? All I could think about was to give her a great time in her first-time blog event experience. 

We were supposed to meet first then go there together but plans changed because the bus that I took was really slow (as in ang kupad) and so, I asked her to go there directly. Did I say I went to MOA riding a bus? Yes I did. Wearing this! Whaaat?

This top is from F-STOP (Fashion Stop). It's a nude sheer chiffon gypsy style blouse with cute ruffle designs. The price is just P250 (mura!) along with my other vintage treasure apparels being sold in my store. Must shop F-STOP now (daming affordable)! Meanwhile, one of my sponsors, Closet Chic gave me a lot of clothes to wear so here I am in one of the brand's items, this lovely textured navy skirt. 

When I arrived, the program is almost finished and a human bingo game was about to start. Everyone was shocked to find out my trivia: I have an exotic pet. I call it a conjugal property between me and my boyfriend JR. Haha. A bunch of tarantulas and a scorpion named Scorpee. If you don't believe me, then you might as well check these (here, here, here).

Afterwards, there was a styling game. We were paired with a male blogger (huhu so so sorry, I forgot cuz I'm horrible with names! :( ) and it was a bit awkward. We didn't know each other and we were very shy to interact. I didn't want to assert anything plus I couldn't really think that time, haha. And so, we came up with a pretty simple mannequin compared to most teams but it's okay, I enjoyed it anyway. Who won? Oh it's Lissa's and David's entry, the love birds of Manila's blogging community, haha joke lang. 

Time passed by quickly and Paulyn and I didn't get the chance to really talk that long but at least we got to chat about the basics, about blogging and eat together during cocktails. I made sure that I didn't make her feel left out (I really hope I didn't) and I would check up on her every now and then because she's like my baby! :) While eating, we bonded with our other blogger friends, Aie, Ana, Ava, Aisa, Nikki, Anne, Tracy, Alyssa, Vern!

Thank you Hang Ten, it was a great idea to bring in the readers with us. And every time I get a chance to invite a reader to any event as long as I'm allowed to (sometimes kasi strict sa events), for sure I'll bring them (actually, YOU) along!

Hello friends, and blog readers!

I got an invite to "The Hang Ten Special Event" this coming Sunday at the Mall of Asia from 2PM - 4PM and we were asked to bring a blogger friend/reader with us. I've met fellow bloggers and readers during events but this is going to be a special one because we are going together there as "buddies". Exciting di ba?

You know, let me share with you my story. I was once a big fan of Aisa when I started blogging last year. She had an event similar to this courtesy of Robinsons Department Store. I applied to be the reader that she would bring and I got picked! And so, we were teamed up and we styled ourselves using pieces (clothes, accessories, etc) from Robinsons, and even though we didn't win the challenge, we ended up being really good blogger friends - close enough that we started Bloggers United together and that we've been sharing a lot of opportunities because one event made it all happen.

The Robinsons event was a breakthrough for me. And I'm really thankful that it was one of the firsts that launched so many blessings that blogging has brought me. I want to make it happen for you too. :) Let's go together at Hang Ten's first-ever blogger event! We'll style a mannequin together and if we win, we'll receive fabulous prizes. Not only that, we'll also get to meet more bloggers and have some food and drinks with them. Sounds super fun right even if we don't win? Haha.

Just let me know if you want to come. :) I'll pick one of you guys by Friday (tomorrow). And if you don't get raffled off, don't worry, I told myself that from the list that will join this, I'll bring them next time to other events in the future.
